When your period is missing or irregular, clarity can be a form of care.

Missing periods can have different causes. This page offers a calm orientation, explains the term hypothalamic amenorrhea, and helps you prepare useful next steps without diagnosing yourself.

An important first step

A missing period deserves appropriate assessment.

Pregnancy and other possible causes should be considered with a qualified healthcare professional. Hypothalamic amenorrhea is a diagnosis of exclusion. It should not be assumed from symptoms alone.

Seek timely qualified support, especially when cycle changes are prolonged, fertility is a concern, or eating, exercise, dizziness, fainting, bone health or significant distress are part of the picture.

Common contexts

Several pressures can overlap.

These experiences may be relevant, but none proves a diagnosis:

  • Psychological stress or a difficult season
  • High exercise load or pressure to keep training
  • Not consistently meeting your body’s energy needs
  • Uncertainty after stopping hormonal contraception
  • Fertility concerns or trying to conceive
  • A current or past difficult relationship with food

A clear definition

What is hypothalamic amenorrhea?

Functional hypothalamic amenorrhea, often shortened to FHA or HA, is a form of absent menstruation associated with changes in the brain-hormone signalling involved in ovulation. Stress, weight change, exercise and low energy availability can be relevant.

Because other conditions can also stop menstruation, recognised clinical guidance recommends assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

Frequently asked

Questions you may be carrying.

Can stress stop a period?

Stress can be relevant, but a missing period can have different causes. Avoid assuming stress is the full explanation without appropriate assessment.

Do I need a formal HA diagnosis to read these resources?

No. The site begins in ordinary language for anyone navigating a missing or irregular period. It does not diagnose readers.

Can yoga or Ayurveda bring my period back?

No outcome can be promised. I offer yoga and Ayurvedic lifestyle guidance as complementary support for rest, stress management and daily routines, not as a treatment or guarantee that your period will return.
